Works of the legendary Group Zero member in the House of Arts

Works of the contemporary German artist Günther Uecker can be seen at the House of Arts in Veszprém from July 26, at an exhibition organized with the support of E.ON Hungária and its Munich parent E.ON Energie AG.

An exhibition of Munich’s Storms Gallery, entitled “Günther Uecker – Eight Pictorial Structures for Veszprém,” opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday July 26 at the House of Arts in Veszprém. Situated in the Castle District, the House of Arts provides a home to the Modern Gallery, one of the city’s newest attractions. Marking its fifth anniversary this year, the gallery contains the contemporary fine art collection of László Vass, an art collector renowned in Europe.

The Walter Storms Gallery, which organized the summer guest exhibition, was founded in 1977 with the aim of promoting contemporary artists, primarily through organizing exhibitions of the works of painters, graphic artists, sculptors and photographers. This summer, at the invitation of E.ON, the gallery is presenting itself to Hungarian art lovers in Veszprém through a showing of the works of an outstanding German contemporary artist.

A member of the legendary one-time Group Zero, Günther Uecker has held retrospective exhibitions in many of the world’s major cities, from Vienna to Moscow, and has designed theater sets in Berlin, Stuttgart and Bayreuth. For decades he has used a simple everyday object, the nail, as the main raw material of his artistic creations. His work has earned him membership of the order of Pour le Mérite, the highest recognition for artists in Germany. Uecker is not unknown to the Hungarian public either, as several of his works can be found in the Vasarely Museum in Pécs and in the Modern Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. The German artist is also favored by collectors; most recently this spring, his work entitled White Spiral fetched 156,800 euros at an auction held in the Dorotheum.

The exhibition “Günther Uecker – Eight Pictorial Structures for Veszprém” can be viewed until October 12, 2008, at the House of Arts in Veszprém.

In 2007, E.ON Hungária received the Culture Sponsor Award from the Minister of Education and Culture for its activities in cultural sponsorship. Hungary’s leading energy supplier has been a sponsor of the Veszprém Summer Festival since 2004. This year the festival welcomes world-renowned stars Herbie Hancock, Ramon Vargas, Erika Miklósa, Zoltán Kocsis, Take6 and the Toto-Bona-Lokua world music trio.
