Environment

We truly believe that our company's actions will be judged on the basis of the kind of world it creates for future generations. This is why E.ON considers environmental issues even when making plans and choosing suppliers.

"Environmental protection costs the country a lot, but it will yield much more by securing our future. We definitely have to solve our environmental problems because people who protect the environment are looking to the future and thinking about the next generation."

(Former president Árpád Göncz)

The E.ON Hungária Group feels responsible for the environment and for people's safety. The Group puts the greatest emphasis on prevention. New facilities are built so that they will cause as little harm to the environment as little as possible while at the same time esthetically fitting into the environment as much as possible. The company makes extensive soil analyses in order to prevent any possible contamination, and by doing this it prevents the possibility of serious environmental damage.

Protective coating is being installed on existing insulators and cables in order to protect birds from electrocution, which is the cause of death for many protected birds that are just learning how to fly. If the cables are not insulated, the birds can be electrocuted when their wings come into contact with the cables.

We take care to design covered cables for networks that are put up in wooded and forested areas. Since trees that touch the lines can cause outages or fires, regulations prescribe cutting down trees within a specified distance along the route. Covered cables, therefore, present less danger to the surrounding trees than uncovered cables do, so fewer trees need to be cut down and the forest openings are much narrower.

In our office work, we use a lot of equipment and machines with replaceable parts that are hazardous to the environment. These include ink cartridges with dangerous components that are used in photocopiers and printers. In order to deal with them safely, we arranged to have the hazardous wastes in many of our offices collected and removed centrally. Careful records are made of these materials, which are then disposed of or recycled.

We constantly monitor and measure our efforts to achieve our environmental goals, and once we have achieved them, we set new targets for ourselves. We are operating in accordance with international standard ISO 14001 at more and more of our subsidiaries.

Environmental awareness and thinking ahead are benefiting our natural environment and all of us while at the same time serving the interests of our customers and helping to keep them satisfied.
